The Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves are not only remarkable for their historical and religious significance but also for their architectural ingenuity. The caves were intricately carved out of sandstone hills, showcasing the skill and craftsmanship of the artisans of that era. The Rani Gumpha, the largest and most elaborate cave, features multiple levels with beautifully sculpted pillars, arches, and friezes that narrate stories from Jain mythology and royal life. The Hathi Gumpha, famous for its inscription, records the achievements of King Kharavela, a prominent ruler of the ancient Kalinga kingdom.
Visitors to the caves can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere while exploring the labyrinth of chambers and terraces. The location also offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, adding to the serene experience. The site is a popular destination for both tourists and scholars, providing a fascinating glimpse into the religious and cultural history of Odisha. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or spirituality, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves offer a unique journey into India’s ancient past.
The Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves are located near Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, India. They are situated on two adjacent hills, Udayagiri (Sunrise Hill) and Khandagiri (Broken Hill), about 6 kilometers from the city center.
The best time to visit the caves is during the winter months, from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for exploring the site. The summer months can be hot, and the monsoon season (June to September) may bring heavy rains, making it less comfortable to visit.
The caves are easily accessible by road from Bhubaneswar. You can hire a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or take a local bus to reach the site. Bhubaneswar is well-connected by air, rail, and road, making it convenient for travelers to reach the city and then visit the caves.
The caves feature ancient rock-cut architecture, intricate carvings, and inscriptions. Notable caves include the Rani Gumpha (Queen's Cave) in Udayagiri, known for its beautiful carvings and multiple levels, and the Hathi Gumpha (Elephant Cave), famous for its inscription detailing King Kharavela's achievements. The caves offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
